Local dealer service irritation

I usually use a dealer a couple of towns south for service, but I decided to use the guys in town today for convenience. Wanted oil change and get the several recalls cleared up, easy peasy, right? 37K miles on a 2021. I'm a teleworker, so don't drive very much.

Got the inspection report and seven "Needs Immediate Attention."

1. Motorcraft fuel injection service $249.95 (this is BS if you use top tier gasoline, which I do, Chevron and 76, mostly)
2. Front Differential Service $225.00
3. Transfer Case Service $199.95
4. Rear Differential Service $289.95
5. Transmission Service $289.95
6. Coolant Service: Replace Coolant $254.00
7. Power Steering Service (eh, no idea, the thing doesn't render anymore)

I mean, we're looking at about $2,000 in services here - something must be seriously wrong with my Bronco.

So, I ask the guy, why?

"It is the recommended service at your mileage/time interval and I don't have any history of it being done. It is 30K or every 5 years they recommend those."

So, I sent him a photo of the maintenance schedule posted at Ford, which says inspect and asked, did you inspect?

""Yes, the only thing you can't inspect is the transmission since it is a sealed system."

I asked was there a problem discovered in inspection or was this intended as a prophylactic measure?

"The fluid just looks dirty, but no problems with the systems were discovered. It is a preventative measure. Just to help take care of your vehicle."

Thanks, but no thanks. And why did it "Need Immediate Attention."

Guess I'll be driving the way a couple of towns south from now on. Lesson learned, you find an honest shop and stick with them. I just pity the people who get fleeced on this stuff.

I just had my diffs and tcase done to the tune of $800 (plus air filter). Labor adds up fast. I'm at 40k miles and even though I know where the breathers are, I had left my Bronco in about 3+ feet of muddy water and ice that froze overnight so it gave me peace of mind. It was about time to have them done anyway, but I was surprised at the air filter since it was good at my oil change right after off-roading in Johnson Valley a few weeks earlier.

I mentioned that to a tech at another dealership, and he said sometimes he has to prevent his techs from getting overeager on maintenance like that. I'd still rather have a fresh one since keeping up with my vehicle is how I plan to keep this 2-door 2.7 on the road as long as possible in case Ford never brings that combo back at a reasonable price. But yes, anyone can definitely get a second opinion if you feel like the recommended is out of hand.

The dealerships and maintenance techs have become snake oil salesmen. My view of the Blue oval gets lower each time I deal with any of the idiots where I live. I order my parts from out of state Ford dealerships and do my own work or use a trusted mechanic. Then the local blue man group of clowns hound me to get recall work done because they want Ford's $ well they are unreliable and not trustworthy so they can F off! I'll coordinate my recall work with other dealerships when I roadtrip out of state. They even want to do my windshield adhesion recall even though I had a windshield replaced elsewhere so it was taken care of. Sure let me take my truck to a known Group of unreliable morons who also don't stock the windshields so if they break mine I have to wait indefinitely for a replacement. Hard pass.

Dealerships make most of their money in the part of the building that is not as eye catching as the one that the salesman resides in. If they can get 5% of the people to bite on doing services like the ones you posted. That is pure πŸ’°πŸ’² πŸ’° πŸ’² !!
But I will say, I have had a few warranted items that needed Immediate attention, (over the years and multiple vehicles) caught during those 719 point inspections. They offer while doing an oil change. They could have just ignored it, and i would have had several hundred if not thousands of dollars worth of repairs made on my dime. But you have to be able decide what is "needed" , and what is just a "sales pitch" . And sometimes, we decide wrong. But thats on us either way.
I dont get mad, when they mention that stuff. I listen, and tell them I'll decide at a later time. Then do my own research.

On a side note... Those "10 min" oil change places will be trying to get you to rotate the air in your tires, change the air in the air filter, and flush the windshield wiper fluid, and they can do it all right now, while its on the lift to save you another trip for 799.99. πŸ€”

One of those 10 min oil change quick lube jobs tried to sell my daughter a cabin air filter for $70 that I had just changed out a week before. No lie, lol.

While I should be surprised, I am not. Typical operating procedures for those places...

They try to up sell on everything. I had all of the differential, transmission, transfer case serviced at around 40 K miles. But that was totally related to where I live and the amount of off road use. Along with regular maintenance came in at $500

I don’t know, I can’t complain about my dealer. Sheehy Ford in Ashland VA! Shout out to Chris Anderson who sold me my vehicle. From day one the guy was awesome. From the ordering thru taking possession and even after the fact. My Bronco had the recall for the instrument panel software reload and they called me before I called them to let me know about it And to get it scheduled. I get it not all dealers are like this, in fact most probably are not but you get a good one, hang onto them!

You know, it's funny, they didn't even talk to me about the air filters, but I usually do those on my own. I tend to buy those in bulk and just change them out on a fairly regular basis.
