I have had several EB's, or Gen1's in my day, I just love the way they look. Being in Knoxville and seeing all the super celebration rides show up has my juices flowing! Anyway, my wife and I have quadruplets who are all going off to college this fall. I want to get a Gen6 this summer so the wife and I can do some overlanding once we are empty nesters. (so weird to think about!) This is my question. Are there any 2 door guys who regret not getting a bigger ride? I am mainly concerned with storage behind the rear seats. I really want a 2 door, but I do fear the lack of storage. I intend to get a roof rack and put a clam-shell tent of some kind up there, so that might limit up-top storage also. Anyway, just thinking through some stuff, thought I'd ask the brain trust for your $.02
Thanks, as always!

Hmm. The two door is really small but there are a few that have deleted the rear seats to gain more room. I carry an air compressor, 4 way hoses, track boards, tool roll, extra tie rods, recovery gear. Backpack with odds and ends and fire extinguisher, a couple of camp chairs a ton of reusable grocery bags and still have room for my tops with the rear seats up. With them down we can even get the second row top in the bronco, in my 4-door. I had an 84 back in the day and in 2004 when they had that concept I knew then I was going to get another bronco if they came back assuming they were only going to be 2-door but when they came out and had a 4-door option the 2-door never was an option for me. My daily is a 2-door coup so trying to get 2 adults and 2 teens in there was a bit of a clown car situation. I can tell you this, there has never been a time where I wished I had a 2-door. But I am a “rather have it and not need it” kinda person.

I like the looks of the 2 door better, the room and extra fuel capacity of the 4 door. We got a 4 door, just because it was a used one and kind of spur of the moment, but I do not regret it.

I have a 2dr and storage is at a premium. Do I regret buying it? NOPE! I had zero interest in a 4dr.

I go on overnight camp trips and was able to fit everything needed in the 2dr on my maiden voyage with it. My tent is small when packed and most of my gear is also small when packed so not an issue for me.. A lot of my gear is backpacker inspired so it packs down small'ish..

Here is everything I brought and it all fit in the 2dr. Keep in mind that I am solo so some things you'd need to double up on. I also went with the hard top off so I did not have the extra vertical space that the hardtop enclosure would provide..

I also have a power tank installed in the rear cargo area that takes up space. I did not fold the rear seats down and used the rear seats to store containers and the rear seat floorboards to store other items.

  • Tent
  • Sleeping mat
  • Sleeping bag
  • Camp chair
  • Camp table
  • Jetboil Minimo
  • 1 frying pan, 1 plate, silverware
  • 2 100g propane tanks for the minimo
  • Yeti 8 cooler
  • Lantern, shovel, axe, flashlight, headlamp
  • Toiletries, dish washing soap, other small items.
  • Winch recovery gear
  • Hoses etc for Power Tank
  • Ford 84pc tool kit
  • Change of clothes
  • 2 gallon water jug

I might be forgetting something but that's the bulk of it. I was able to use the front pass side seat and floorboard area to store items that you would not be able to use..

If you fold the rear seats down and keep the hardtop on, I think you'd be able to store quite a bit. Even more so since you say you want a rack with a RTT.. Sure you might no be able to see out the rear window if you pack it up high but that extra vertical space with the hard top on would come in handy.. Just make sure to bungie or strap things down.

I wish I would have taken photos of everything packed in but I didn't. Maybe next trip at the end of the month I'll remember to do so..

Can't imagine 2 people needing more room for gear than what the 2 door offers.
Pile all your gear some where and measure it.
Bear in mind where you are going,
Camping in a camp ground will relieve you of carrying a table for example.

Some people are never happy with a reasonable size tent, for example the girl in the office has a 3 room tent, never saw a tent with a foyer before...

Wifey & I had a 2-door '78 Bronco, and lots of camping here in Colorado mostly at trailheads for early morning 'alpine' starts on mtn trails. Having twin boys and a 2-door anything was also a 'clown show', so traded the Bronco we loved for the very practical Volvo wagon.

Last year, we traded for our 2nd Bronco, and there was no question - It's a 4-door Wildtrak. There were several reasons, but just 2 made for an easy choice - Comfy highway ride on those 800 to 2,400 mile roads trips we do several each year. Also, gotta have room for 5 grandkids.

Yes, you folks may be empty-nesters now, but grandkids are great fun and y'all have A LOT to look forward to - Prepare yourselves!!

Cheers

I'll try not to let my bias talk but I never gave to 4dr a nanosecond of passing thought. Sure it's been less convenient for a family, but we've had my 2 door all over the country and have adapted to taking less stuff. I don't even have a roof rack, just a small rack over the spare.

The bonus is you also bring less crap home too. Last summer we went to TN with another family, we had the Bronco and they had a GM 1500 pickup. It came back with a full bed.

2 door or 4 door is a personal choice.
We test drove both.
The 4 door was definitely a smoother ride and the additional space just made more sense for us.

Taking road trips and loading travel gear is easy.
Our big Old English Sheepdog can easily get in and out of the backseat.
I play in a band and can load my full drum kit (Bass drum, 6 toms, snare drum, cymbals, hardware/stands, seat, pedals...gear bags).

We like our 4 door, it's a nice ride, it looks good and we plan to keep her for many years.

Gen 6 looks best Squatched. Other than that, determine the space you need and choose accordingly. My personal preference is 2 door.

We had a 4d outer banks and traded it for a 2d badlands. No roof rack, but do have a hitch rack. Of course the 4d holds more but we do love the 2d Better. If you know how to pack, I think the 2d will be fine. You can always add a roof and hitch rack to give you more room. If you are one of those campers that needs portable AC units and high tech gear, might want to go with the 4d.

I just spent a week camping in Moab. Plenty of room if you pack well and use the space from the floor to the roof, and the window ledges.
I was by myself, but pretty much cooked for 2 and dropped my wife of at the kids on the way, so had her luggage as well.

I have found the more my wife and I adventure in the 2 door the more we hone the skills of properly packing and being prepared while being creative in how we pack and what we spend money on and not over packing. We used to just pack the Mustang trunk and take it places that were not it's native territory. So we were used to 2 doors and 4 seats. The back is definitely much smaller then a trunk.

^100% this. I do NOT have a squatch and it's the only concession I regret along with aux switches. The SAS has a far superior squat and stance to it. It just plain looks better. I can't put my finger on it because even when a SAS and non SaS rig has all SAS or non SAS suspension and tires completely switched out the rigs that started out as a SAS just always look better. The SAS wheels look great too but personally I would have still switched them out since there are so many of them.

I play the stereo really well. I know where all the buttons are and I am quick with them. It fits perfectly in my two door and I still have plenty of space left over.😁

Still have four doors on the work truck though.

I have a 2 door and do not regret it in the slightest. I do wish there were storage under the rear seats like in the 4 door but big deal. The rear is limited but I got the rear enclosure that is secure like a trunk and I use the top of this cage as a shelf. I don't like having my back seat area packed as I like having things neat and tidy and also don't want to draw attention to thiefs who would break a window. I was looking at rooftop clamshell tents as they can also store items in the down position, it ultimately was not an area I was willing to invest over $3k. Tents and hotels pay off better. Plus I want sun coming in when I take the front panels off.

Most of what we need can fit on the rack once I learned to pack smarter not harder. 8 person tent, queen size air mattress, powered air pump, 2 sleeping bags, a tent lantern/ceiling fan from Amazon, 2 full size folding camp chairs, foldable foot stool, 2 folding tables, 1 of which is pretty large, some of the kitchen wares, a pop up beach tent (so the wife is happy at Bronco meets), foam mats, 4 recovery boards, a leveling jack base, shovel, and probably something I'm forgetting is all right there on the back half of the roof rack. Bronco branded Igloo cooler bag on the back seat floor and camping stove on top of rear enclosure. The nooks and crannies like metal door storage bins, front seat rear storage via amazon headrest hooks and molle storage have items at all times incase I take off on a whim like flashlights, lanterns, first aid, packable blankets ,packable jackets, a go bag, lots of TP and wipes, sanitizers, off road Bronco backpack, Bronco roadside assistance kit, flat tool box with tools (soon to be motley Bronco tool roll!), dry foods, Bronco Nation Flannel!,towels, beach blanket, camping dish soap ect. ect. I tend to over prepare and there is still plenty of room and you wouldn't even know most of the stuff I have tucked away. It did take some creativity and trial and error though. On our first overlanding/camping experience the whole back seat was piled high and it drove me nuts.

Love my 2 Dr Basesquatch; the looks, turning radius is ridiculous, 5k cheaper, plenty of room I have 3 other 4 door vehicles for carrying people. Might sound weird the only thing I miss is my previous ride (still own, Chevy Trailblazer) was a 4 door and rolling down the driver front window and cracking open the back driver side let me drive practically turbulence free at any speed. My Bronco, no matter what I try with L/R windows is always blustery inside. Small but significant issue for this fresh air addict. So I put on a BB cap and wind them down and don;t worry
